Eczema Around Eyes And Mouth

what could be the causes of dry, flaky skin?

i recently had a viral infection and it caused itchy red skin around my mouth which was quite spotty. the virus has passed but i still have really dry, flaky skin on my nose, forehead and around my eyes. i have used oilatum moisturiser on it but it still hasn't helped. it's really getting me down as it is making me look really scaly :( i have been washing my hair in washing up liquid to get a dye out of it so i don't know if that could be a cause of it? i have dermovate, dipbrobase and other various steroid creams prescribed from the doctor as I suffer from eczema and sebherroic dermatitis but i don't think i'm supposed to use them on the face.
What could it be? And what can I do?
Any help appreciated :)

Hi there,

Read the package inserts of the cream you have properly to see if you can use it on your face.

Alternativley I would maybe use a very light exfoliator and moisturise possibly with hydro cortizone.

Best best is to call your derm.

Good luck

Renova Cream is a cure for sun damaged skin discolored complexion and the acne mottled face

For those troubled by rough skin that has seen damage by the sun, or a face pock-marked by acne, or a mottled, discolored complexion, or fine wrinkles that stare back at you in the mirror, take heart – Renova-Retin A cream can help to restore a healthy complexion again, as both Renova and Retin-A contain Tretinoin, which is related to Vitamin A.  Like Vitamin A, Tretinoin protects and nurtures collagen and elastin, structural proteins that maintain the skin’s texture and elasticity, to give us a youthful look.

While Retin-A was being prescribed since 1971 to treat acne and topical Tretinoin was approved the same year, Renova gained approval from the FDA in 1996 for the treatment of sun-related problems. The active metabolite in Renova and Retin-A is Tretinoin, which is related to Vitamin A, the vitamin that enriches skin elasticity and texture.   While dead cells in the skin are being shed, Tretinoin stimulates the growth of new cells.  Dermatologists soon discovered that the combination of both Renova and Retin-A was a boon to treat mild to moderate cases of acne, for curing discolored or mottled skin conditions, and for smoothening fine wrinkles, leading to a healthy, youthful complexion again.

Tretinoin has a multi-dimensional effect on the skin – it reduces the skin’s rough texture, increases the epidermal thickness, lightens skin pigmentation, smoothens the fine wrinkles, and while healing acne, it reduces the formation of fresh pimples.  It also triggers retinoid receptors in the skin cells, which affect the synthesis of proteins like collagen and elastin, as well as production of sebum.  As people grow older, Matrix Metalloproteinases [MMP] enzymes work undeterred in breaking down collagen and elastin, leading to the formation of wrinkles and a sagging skin.  Tretinoin successfully inhibits the MMPs from playing dirty, so that we can maintain a youthful appearance!

Application of this cream begins to yield results in a month or so, by reducing the skin’s rough texture, while it takes a few months for the dark spots in the skin to disappear.  The fine wrinkles have been found to diminish after a year’s application of the Renova-Retin A cream, but the medication does not remove furrows or deep wrinkles.  Tretinoin is useful in controlling acne, but usage within the first week or 10 days can lead to a worsening of the acne.  It usually takes a couple of weeks to show some results, but it takes an application of about 6-8 weeks for the acne to get better.

However, there are some drugs that interact with this formation, including preparations containing Benzoyl peroxide, or Salicyclic acid and Resorcinol [both of which cause peeling of skin].  Sulfa drugs, tranquilizers, water pills, and antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin and Tetracycline should not be used with Renova as these can increase sensitivity to sunlight, and damage the skin.  Cosmetic products that have a high concentration of alcohol, menthol, peel of lime, or citrus, and medicated soaps, shampoos, shaving lotions, or astringents can irritate the skin if Renova-Retin A cream is used alongside.  Hair removers or waxes that dry, and electrolysis should be avoided while using this cream.  Let your treating doctor know if you are a habitual drinker, smoke regularly, or consume banned drugs, as alcohol, smoking and banned drugs can all interfere with Tretinoin.

Before you start using Renova-Retin A cream, inform your dermatologist of your medical history, and all the medications [including nutritional supplements and herbal products] you are taking, as an overdose of Vitamin A can work against you.  Let the doctor know if you have ever had eczema, or any allergy [especially to Vitamin A or any other medicine/food/dyes/preservatives], or if your skin is sensitive to sunlight.  As using this cream can increase your sensitivity to the sun, wind or cold, it is recommended that you avoid being out in the sun, or wear protective clothing [including a hat], or use a sunscreen, and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme conditions of the weather.  Pregnant or lactating women should not use this cream without the advice of their doctor.

The cream should be applied each night, preferably; after you have washed your face thoroughly, patted it dry, and waited for about 20 minutes or so, before applying a tiny drop of the cream evenly all over your face.  Be careful and avoid touching your eyes, nostrils, mouth, or any open wound with this cream, or it will hurt very badly.  In case you do make such contact, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and then wash the affected area properly.  Do not apply more than once a day, or huge amounts of the cream, for an over-application will lead to over-dryness and irritation of the skin.  If your skin becomes too dry, you can ask the dermatologist to recommend another gel along-with Tretinoin.  If you forget to make an application one day, follow the regular schedule the next day; but, if you have been instructed to use it once in 2/3 days, and you miss one application, you can make an application within 12 hours from when you should have actually used it, or speak to your doctor.  Don’t wash your face too often, and that, too, with a mild soap, so that the skin and the acne does not get worse.

The commonly-reported side effects of Renova-Retin A are not severe and include:  mild peeling or redness of the skin, burning or stinging sensation in the skin, itching, or dry skin.  If these symptoms persist or worsen; or if your face looks puffy or crusted; or if this cream causes a severe darkening or lightening of the affected areas, then you should contact your doctor immediately.  This cream can be harmful if swallowed, and can cause an allergic reaction including excessive peeling or redness of the skin.

The cream/gel is flammable, so it should be stored at ordinary room temperature away from heat, light or dampness [but not in the freezer], and kept away from children and pets.  Renova 0.02% cream is not recommended for youngsters below 18, adults above 71, for those with sun-damaged skin, and should not be used for more than 1 year.
