Eczema Children Treatment

Does anyone have any tips for treating eczema in young children ?
my son is 3 and has had mild eczema since being a young baby, when i say mild he has about 10-15 small patches overall, its not extreme and it doesn't seem to irritate him to much except when the dry patches start to crack, but he has started nursery school now and alot of the patches are visible (arms etc) and i know how inquisitive other children are and i dont want him to get a complex about it, the doctor has prescribed a number of treatments in the past but they are not for long term use and when it clears and i stop using the cream on him within a week they come back, im just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to keep it at bay rather than treating it over and over again? any ideas greatly appreciated ?
Sorry to hear about your little boy. I suffered from excema as a child and both of my kids have had it from time to time, so I know how frustrating it is.
How often do you give him a bath? Is it part of his daily routine? I ask this because with both of my children, bathing every day definitely made their excema patches worse. Unless they are really dirty, kids don't really need to bath every day. The skin produces its own natural oils to cleanse and moisturise the skin, and the bath water and any bath products can wash these away.
Another thing I found was that my daughter was actually allergic to aqueous cream when she was a baby - it used to make her poor dry skin all spotty and rashy as well. So it may be that your son is also sensitive to some of the moisturising creams you are using (some children are even sensitive to Oilatum and similar products, and lots of kids have problems with Johnsons and other baby products, as you probably know). Instead of aqueous cream, I use E45 on my son's face when it is dry, and I find that I have to apply it rigorously every hour or two for several days before it makes any difference. Sometimes it does seem to get a bit worse before it gets better, but I try to use that rather than the stronger hydrocortisone creams wherever possible.
I found that when my daughter started nursery school, the excema on her arms got worse for a while. I think its because the children wash their hands quite often and use strong soaps. Also, they tend not to dry their hands and arms very well, which can lead to chapping and further aggravation of the excema patches. It might be worth asking your son's nursery teacher whether someone could help with this?
Anyway, I'm sorry this is so long - I just wanted to let you know my experience as well as offering some tips. I hope it helps, if only a little bit! Good Luck x

Eczema is a chronic skin condition that causes the skin to become itchy, reddened, dry and cracked.
Atopic eczema is the most ordinary form of eczema, and mainly affect children.
The exact cause of atopic eczema is unidentified, but it often occurs in people who are prone to allergy ('atopic' means sensitivity to allergens).
The meaning of the word "eczema" can cause confusion. Many people use this word to refer to a common skin form called atopic dermatitis. When this is the meaning, the words "eczema/atopic dermatitis" may be used.
The word "eczema" also has a more general meaning. Eczema can mean a family of skin conditions that causes the skin to become distended, irritated, and itchy.

2. Chemical irritants, such as pesticides, paint strippers, alcohol, astringents, perfumes, harsh soaps, detergents, and household cleaners

6. Infections of any kind

It is estimated that at any one time around 25% of the population has a skin problem that could benefit from medical care; skin conditions account for between 15 and 20% of a GP's workload.
One cause of itchy skin is eczema, a general term encompassing various inflamed skin conditions; there are more than 10 different

Before prescribing a treatment plan, a dermatologist considers the type of eczema, extent and severity of the eczema, patient's medical history, and a number of other factors. Medication and other therapies will be prescribed as needed to:
1. Control itching
2. Reduce skin inflammation
3. Clear infection
4. Loosen and remove scaly lesions
5. Reduce new lesions
It is important to realize that in most cases no one treatment will be effective.
