How can I make shaving hurt less with eczema?
I hate shaving. I have eczema and after I shave, my legs get very red and itchy. I've tried using Nair but My legs started bleeding and my knees were swelled up for two days. It also doesn't help any that I have very coarse hair.. I've also tried waxing but I can't take the pain, especially over the eczema. I can't shave every day either because after I shave it takes the rash at least three days to clear up and the hair starts growing back. My legs are NEVER completely smooth. I'm embarrassed around my boyfriend because of it, And I always have to wear long pants even in the summer and I live in southern FL. I don't have the money for laser hair removal so it really isn't an option..
Is there anything at all I can do, or anything you can recommend to get rid of the rash?
You need to get the eczema looked at.
I highly recommend you go to a good allergist. Many, Many times Eczema is the body's reaction to an allergy.
You may be allergic to a food like Soy or airborn like dust mites or even environmental likes cats.
There are many things in our environment that can cause allergies. There are many things you could be allergic to that is causing the painful eczema. There are products that can help deal with the eczema. One product is called Triamcinolone Cream. This comes in two forms. One that is thick like vasaline and one that is a white lotion form that usually works better. Your doctor will know which to prescribe. These won't really get rid of the pain but it will help settle the inflamation. It does have a mild steroid but it works. And you will not need it forever just while the skin is truly red.
The Allergist will probably also prescribe hydrocordizone or allergy medicines like Zyrtex, Claritin, or some kind of allergy med. This can help with the allergy.
If you do not have money to go to an allergist, I recommend you try Zyrtex for a month. You can get this at Target, Walmart, Wal-greens even a grocery store. Try this and one of the creams below.
The reason you may need to see a doctor is that the shaving is causing a secondary infection. Which will increase the itchiness and the raw skin to form a layer of skin cells that is a never ending trap. Pain, red, Pain, red, Pain....you get the idea.
You might even need to go on anitbiotics for a few weeks. But this could clear it up and you will
never be embarrased again.
I recommend you take Flax seed oil or Fish oil tablets. You can get these at a health food store.
Your body needs to heal from the inside out. Vitamins Zinc, E and D can help too but don't over do it with these.
Does anxiety increase your rashes?
Try an over the counter homeopathic medicine called CalmsForte this can be found at wal-mart too. Many times eczema is worse when we are stressed out. No worries you can start to relax. If you do not wish to take anything try yoga, or more bubble baths and times to put your feet up and rest.
Once you have met with a doc, ask for products to help with shaving. You may need to consider soaking in a tub prior to shaving. This might help. The more moisture that gets on the skin the better to heal itself. Some good creams to put on after you bathe are
Aquaphor, Eucerin, Triderma, Palmer's, Nivea, Lubriderm...
You may have to try some samples because even these products may have something mild that you might be allergic too. Take it slowly.
