Eczema Raw Food
Eczema Raw Food
dietary foods than promote/help the body to heal? (eczema)?

i have a pretty bad case of eczema on my hands, it's been getting better slowly because l'm using perscription ointment 4 times a day, but it's been a month and while it seems to be much better, it will get worse and i'm wondering if there is any foods in particular that might help speed up the process?

i've read on YA that eating fruits and vegetables or anything that is raw can help eczema, but anything in particular?

i try and drink a lot of water to help hydrate the skin and every night i either wear gloves to avoid scratching or i wrap my hands up in bandages to help the skin absorb the ointment b/c it's summer here in australia so it's harder to heal, but any other tips? l'm really desperate to get rid of it, it's very irritating and well, hideous.

any tips would be very much appreciated, thanks!

Taking vitamin E or other vitamins
Cutting out egg and cow's milk from your or your diet
Taking supplements that contain 'friendly bacteria' (probiotics)
Cutting out all foods apart from a few, such as lamb, carrots and rice (this is called a 'few foods' diet)
Taking zinc supplements
Taking supplements of essential fatty acids, such as evening primrose oil, fish oil, blackcurrant oil and borage oil. (These are called essential because your body can't make them. They are linoleic acid (omega-3) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-6).)
How can it help?

We don't know if any change in your or your child's diet can help. There hasn't been enough research. Here's what we do know.

Taking vitamin E or other vitamins

In one study half the adults and children who took vitamin E supplements had much less eczema after eight months. But only 1 of 46 (2 percent) who took a dummy supplement (a placebo) said their eczema had reduced. In 3 of 20 who took the supplements the eczema cleared up completely.8

But other studies found that vitamin E doesn't help people with eczema.

There's no good evidence that taking other vitamins can help.

Cutting out egg and cow's milk

One small study found that the eczema symptoms in babies allergic to cow's milk are more likely to improve if they aren't given cow's milk.9 But there's no evidence that cutting out eggs or cow's milk helps relieve symptoms in other people who have eczema.

Taking supplements that contain 'friendly bacteria' (probiotics)

One small study found that children who took probiotics twice a day were more likely to say their eczema symptoms were getting better than those who took a dummy treatment (placebo).5 The supplements in this study contained the bacteria called Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri. But it was a very small study with just 33 children. So we need more research before we can say whether taking probiotics can help people with eczema.

Changing to a 'few foods' diet

There's no good evidence that changing to a diet that includes just a handful of simple foods can help relieve the symptoms of eczema.

Zinc supplements

There's no good evidence to show that taking zinc supplements can help your eczema.

Adding essential fatty acids

There' no good evidence to show that adding foods that contain essential fatty acids to your diet can help relieve your eczema symptoms.

Why should it work?

Some doctors think that food allergies may cause eczema in some people. If that's true, people with eczema who are allergic to a food should get better if they stop eating that food.1 2 This is why some doctors think that cutting out eggs and cow's milk from your or your child's diet may help eczema symptoms. The 'few foods' diet cuts out all foods that can cause an allergy by restricting your diet to a handful of simple foods such as lamb, carrots and rice. Even so, there's no good evidence these diets work.

Some doctors also think that adding certain foods or supplements to your diet may help. Here's why they recommend these:

Vitamin E or other vitamins may help people with eczema to keep their skin healthy.
Supplements that contain 'friendly bacteria' (probiotics) may help by preventing children becoming allergic to things that can cause eczema.10
Zinc supplements may help your skin to heal more quickly and may help your eczema clear up more quickly.3
Essential fatty acids from foods such as fish oils may help some people with eczema to make sure their skin stays healthy. 3
Can it be harmful?

In the studies we looked at, giving up certain foods didn't cause any harmful effects. However, a diet that isn't balanced can be harmful. For example, children on dairy-free diets may not get enough calcium, protein and energy. They can have problems later in life if that happens.

Adults can have trouble, too, if their diet doesn't give them the vitamins, minerals and other things they need. That's why it's important to talk to your doctor or a dietitian before you change your own or your child's diet.

Vitamin E and other vitamins

In one study we looked at, one child had a rash after taking a vitamin B-6 supplement. 3

Supplements that contain 'friendly bacteria' (probiotics)

In one study some of the children who were given one type of probiotic had diarrhoea. 3

Zinc supplements

In one small study of zinc supplements, one child's eczema became much worse and another child got an itchy rash. But we don't know if these reactions were caused by the zinc supplements.6

Essential fatty acids

We didn't find evidence of any harmful effects.
