Sensitive Skin? Here are some tips for you! by Medimanage.com

You go on your school picnic to a water park, everyone else in enjoying in the water but as soon as you go in the water, your skin is unnaturally red and there are rashes on it. You are forced to sit out of the water for the entire day….

On another hiking trip in 12th grade, none of your friends seem to be affected by the sun, while your skin burns and turns bright red. Henceforth, you stick to wearing long sleeved clothes and hats while your friends get a healthy tan!

You often wonder why your skin has made its mind to make all outdoor activities difficult for you. Why when everyone's skin is fine does your skin have to have a perpetual flustered look, why should it be red and swollen and suffer from all kinds of allergies?

The simple reason is that it is of sensitive skin type and thus more susceptible to allergens, sun, dust, chemicals and pollution.  However, before you decide that your skin is sensitive consult a dermatologist to ascertain if there aren't other causes behind it.

Some signs of sensitive skin are:

  • Broken capillaries around the cheeks
  • Your skin tends to flush easily- for example after eating spicy food
  • Your skin often feels warm
  • Your skin easily reacts to products producing rashes and redness

Those with other skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, acne, rosacea and psoriasis are likely to have sensitive skin too.

For long you have been struggling to take care of your skin, here are some tips for you!

Wash your face

Dust, pollution, sweat and grime all irritate your skin so you need to wash your face at least two or three times as per as the weather conditions.

Patch test

Before you buy any new cosmetic product, remember to conduct a patch test on your skin. While testing out the product, test it on the area behind your ear. Testing on the face rather than on the wrist is better because sensitivity of your facial skin will definitely be more than that of wrist. Keep the product on for 24 hours and look out for any allergic reactions like swelling and redness.

Choose your make up products with care

Your skin is very sensitive to chemicals present in cosmetics hence you have to take efforts to use the right kind of products that suit your skin.

Cleansers: You need to look out for a light cleanser that does not contain harsh ingredients like alcohol or benzoyl peroxide. Choose a milk or cream based cleanser. Use lukewarm water or cotton balls to remove the cleanser. Avoid washing off the cleanser with hot water.

Toners: Look out for mild toners that contain ingredients like sandalwood, rose, chamomile etc. that have a soothing effect on the skin.

Moisturizers: Opt for a rich, non greasy and water based moisturizer. Avoid those which contain mineral oil, lanoline and other greasy ingredients that block the pores in your skin. You can look out for a moisturizer with sun protection of at least SPF 15.

Exfoliators: When you are dealing with sensitive skin you have to be quite careful. Choose an exfoliator that is gentle on your skin with smaller granules. A cream exfoliator that you can rub off later is a good choice. Remember, sensitive skin does not need more exfoliation that once a week.

Sunscreen: Your skin requires a good protection from sun, choose for a Sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and apply it 30 to 15 minutes before going out in the sun. Avoid going out between 10 am to 4 pm as sun is the brightest at these hours. If you find that your sunscreen doesn't suit your skin, use an aloe vera gel based sunscreen.

Some Do's for you

  • Use products keeping the weather in mind, in summers you may need deep cleansers in summers but the same may make your skin dry in winters.
  • Other than these you can try organic or herbal remedies that are devoid of harsh chemicals and are unlikely to harm your skin.
  • When you are going for a facial, tell the person about your skin type so that they only use the gentlest products.
