Does Your Child Suffer From Eczema: How To Help Soothe The Physical And Psychological Symptoms

If your child has a propensity towards allergic reactions or asthma this can also predispose him or her to developing eczema. Kids do not tolerate itchy feelings too well. Not only is this an itchy problem, but kids can become acutely aware of flaws on their bodies and feel uneasy around other kids. You can feel a bit helpless as a parent about ways to help your child cope with this skin disorder that can have a chronic nature.

One reason why some children feel ostracized by others is if other kids think they can catch something contagious. Be sure your child knows that eczema is not contagious. It is not a bacterial or fungal problem. Though it may look like chicken pox or scabies, it is not something that others can catch. The reason why some members of the same family may also have eczema is due to genetics. Your child may not realize this and think that it is contagious. Let them understand the difference between genetics and a communicable disease.

The first way to help your child is to provide ways to minimize the itching sensations. This can be done by the use of baths with oatmeal, antihistamine capsules and creams that ease itching. If your child is always itchy, not only is there the potential for developing a bacterial infection but also the child is always reminded of their eczema problem.

Explain to your child that scratching can make things worse and it will make the bumps bigger. If you need to play on your child's vanity, do this so that there is no scratching. Wet compresses can help when things are very uncomfortable. Cut and file the fingernails to avoid temptations to scratch and minimize skin damage.

If the weather is appropriate, have your child wear long sleeves and pants to school so that there won't be opportunity for either teasing by others or scratching. The fabric should be cotton to avoid additional problems. Tell your child it's fine to play with others but to wash their hands with anti-bacterial soap after recess.

Add in some fun things for your child on the weekend to help your child get their mind off the problem. Also try to cut back to see if common foods that cause allergic responses in others such as dairy, nut products and certain grains may improve their skin eczema.
