Hydrocortisone Cream Eczema
Hydrocortisone Cream Eczema
Possible severe trouble with Eczema cream?

Having had severe trouble with Eczema as a child, there has always been the Eczema cream around my house. "Eumovate" cream, and "Hydrocortisone" cream, are ones I have with me right now. Having never really been told how serious these creams are, around a year ago, I frequently put these creams on itchy areas I got. Normally on -normal- areas like elbos and fingers. However I also suffered from Itchy testicles, and an ictch at the base of my penis. After reading the packet out of curiousity recently, and doing a litle research, I find how serious these creams really are. I have in the past put these creams on my genitals, and somewhat frequently. I am rather worried, what are the possible side effects. These creams did seem to sort out the "itch" however it did reoccor.

You need to determine the cause of itching...

if the source of itching is "atopic" or allergic in nature... then corticosteroid creams will work. The creams you mentioned are corticosteroid creams. Excessive or prolonged application can make your skin "thinner", or sometimes it can give a "discoloration" to your skin. It dries up your skin too. Usually, they are applied "THINLY" on the affected area only... by a cotton applicator... once or twice a day and you shouldn't exceed 7 days.

But if the itch (e.g. jock itch) is caused by a fungi... then corticosteroid cream like hydrocortisone is NOT the cream of choice.. Actually it will make things worse.. costicosteroid creams makes you prone to fungal infections. These creams are NOT for viral lesions as well -- e.g. herpes.

Best advice I can give you: Don't use these creams without the supervision of a doctor, nurse or pharmacist.

Cream Eczema – Use the Right Cream

If I found a new cream that promised to clear my eczema I would carry out a systematic test on my skin before I got too excited.

There are a lot of creams and ointments on the market at the moment all of which promise to cure or improve the condition of your eczema skin.

Some of these creams and ointments are useless and some of them do indeed make a difference to your rash. For instance, I was often prescribed hydrocortisone ointment by my doctor as a child.

I used it twice a day on occasions and it was the only external treatment that consistently made a difference to my rash.

Long term hydrocortisone use is not recommended and whenever my eczema got better I would stop using it. But of course, my skin condition would return immediately.

Whenever I was prescribed a new ointment or cream I found they did not make any difference to my condition.

If I were still suffering from eczema today and had to test various creams and ointments I would test them on a patch of my skin, probably my arm and I would keep a journal to make notes of any change.

By keeping a journal I could keep a written record of the benefits or otherwise of each new treatment.

Keeping a journal does not have to be complicated. A few sentences on a daily basis is all that is needed.

Here are some tips on keeping a daily journal.

Cream Eczema – Use the Right Cream Tip #1

Find a loose-leaf binder or spiral note book. Make a one or two sentence record of any differences you see on the patch of eczema you are testing the cream on. Is it drier today than yesterday? Do you notice any slight change in the condition?

Cream Eczema – Use the Right Cream Tip #2

Make a note of the amount of cream you are using on your test spot. Make a note of how often you are using the cream or ointment. Is there an initial sting or does it feel cooling on your test patch.

Cream Eczema – Use the Right Cream Tip #3

At the weekends review your journal. Go over the notes you have made during the week and decide if you are ready to use the ointment on the rest of your body or need to test another cream or ointment on another part of your body.
