Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (1901-1980) father of Modern Clinical Hypnosis.
He is credited with the creation of One-Session Therapy, Neurolinguistic
Programming, and Story-Telling cures.
Dr. Erickson paid attention to patient experiences that other medical personnel
often ignored. Working in his first hospital he noticed that children who had long visits from relatives reacted with a higher rate of blood pressure, heartbeat and body temperature for up to four hours after the visits.
He concluded that visits at the hospital by close relatives caused patient self-pity, fear and anxiety. Whatever was discussed caused pain and anger in the patient and
ten-minute visits were ten-minutes too long. His original research was rejected by
both the medical staff and relatives.
University of Connecticut Health Center Research
Professor Robert E. Cone discovered in December 2009 that our Fight-or-Flight
response (activated by fear, stress and anxiety) is also responsible for central immune police cells called Regulatory T-Cells.
New research is underway to comprehend how our Nervous System controls
the T-Immune Cells. Understanding how the two different systems interact may
produce new treatments to control arthritis, lupus, and eczema – all autoimmune
diseases.
Get This
Stressful situations like hospital visits and holidays with your extended family make
folks ill by intensifying, inflaming and worsening latent infections and existing
autoimmune diseases. The magic word is Stress and it occurs when we attempt to
inhibit Fight-or-Flight.

Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems
Humans are controlled by our Autonomic Nervous System for both our behaviors
and the Immune System for health and longevity. ANS is divided into our Sympathetic Nervous System for our Fight-or-Flight system and the Parasympathetic Nervous System, which creates relaxation and rest.
Who Cares
Our body and mind balances Fight-or-Flight (adrenaline and Cortisol – the Stress
hormone) with Rest and Relaxation (Parasympathetic Nervous System).
Chronic stress causes serious diseases including Heart-Stroke-Cancer when our daily experiences are out-of-balance between Cortisol and Acetylcholine. When the stressful episode ends, acetylcholine inhibits the production of Cortisol when we are
in a balanced state.
Wait – Inquiring Minds Need to Know
A telephone conversation with Mom produces a powerful stress-reducing hormone.
New research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison led by Dr. Leslie Seltzer:
An unannounced stress test for 7-12 year old girls got their hearts racing and increases Cortisol – the stress hormone soaring.
The experiment consisted of three controls: 33% were hugged in person by their
mothers to relieve the stress. Another 33% telephoned and spoken to their Mom
for comfort. The final 34% watched a 75-minute neutral video.
Results
Telephoning their Mom for support was identical to an in-person hug, smile and kiss. Why? The girl's level of Oxytocin – the love hormone (emotional bonding) washed away the Cortisol levels of stress.
What happened was an inhibition of the Sympathetic Nervous System and a switch
to rest and relaxation from the girls Parasympathetic Nervous system.
These findings were published in the journal – Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Does Oxytocin apply only to women? It is best known during Labor in childbirth,
however, the neurotransmitter Oxytocin is also involved in orgasm, social recognition, pair-bonding, anxiety, trust and love.
Career and the Workplace
University of California at San Francisco researchers find that the hormone
Oxytocin influences our ability to Bond with others. Further, it is associated
with the necessary skills to create and maintain interpersonal relationships.
Human attachment and bonding are emotional experiences facilitated by
Oxytocin, according to lead researcher Rebecca Turner. Different levels
of Oxytocin in women appeared based on distress and anxiety compared to security
in their relationships.
Women in the Labor Force
Did you know that in 2010 women constitute 49.1% of the nation's jobs?
More men than women are laid off in a recession. Maybe it is because they
are paid 80% of what men receive. What is a fact is that women are moving
up the ladder for executive promotions.
Career relationships at the office produce physical changes in the bloodstream
Oxytocin levels of women. How you speak to them will produce different results.
