5 Amazing Fish Oil Effects You Cannot Live Without
Let’s face it. When it comes to supplements there is a ton of market hype. Our minds go into overdrive trying to determine what’s real and what’s not, what fact is and what is fallacy. When it comes to fish oil effects, things are no different. However, we can take into account the research that has been conducted with fish oil, and follow in the direction it points toward; the direction of promise, healing, longevity and health.
Fish oil effects are so numerous it would be impossible to discuss them all in one article. I would like to outline for you the best, most prominent ones that have made this supplement so loved by doctors, dietitians and health experts.
Fish Oil Effects and the Brain
Deficiencies in omega 3 fats have been linked to many maladies including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, mood swings, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and ADD. Millions upon millions of people suffer from just these conditions alone. Maybe even you do, or know a loved one who does.
Researchers from institutions as prestigious as the Harvard School of Public Health have shown some of these conditions will greatly improve with increased omega 3 fatty acid intake. Other studies have shown that even if you don’t have any of these conditions, memory and focus can improve with consistent use of fish oil supplements.
Fish Oil Effects and the Heart
The American Heart Association has stated, “Omega 3 fatty acids benefit the heart of healthy people, and those at high risk of — or who have — cardiovascular disease.”
One of the best known and studied benefits of omega 3 fatty acids is for heart health. Until recently, this was the number #1 killer in the Western world which has been recently surpassed by cancer. Fish oil effects have been shown to help those with heart disease, and help protect those who don’t, but might be susceptible to it down the line due to family history and genetics.
How does it do this? Well, for starters, omega 3’s can thin the blood. This is helpful since heart attacks occur when a blood clot gets lodged inside one of the coronary arteries. Keeping the blood thin can greatly reduce your chances for developing a problematic clot in your bloodstream.
In addition, fish oil effects can reduce triglyceride levels. These are blood fats that are closely related to cholesterol, and when they accompany high cholesterol, your chances for heart disease can increase dramatically.
Research has also shown that omega 3’s can help reduce or prevent heart rhythm abnormalities by making the electrical system of the heart stronger. This has direct benefits for those at risk of sudden death from cardiac arrest.
Fish Oil Effects and Cancer
As I said earlier, cancer has now overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in the US. Of course, there are numerous types of cancer. Some exciting recent research is showing that omega 3’s may help prevent cancer from occurring and also help prevent it from progressing if it has already occurred.
Although more studies need to be done urgently in this area, DHA and EPA omega 3’s, found in fatty fish and fish oil supplements, may protect against the following types of cancers: breast, prostate, testicular and ovarian. Breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men, in particular, are so common and claim so many lives that any substance like omega 3 that shows great promise against them should be studied more extensively.
In the meantime, although the studies that have been conducted are not conclusive, it seems increasing one’s intake of omega 3 fats can help in the battle against cancer.
Fish Oil Effects and Pregnant or Nursing Mothers
It’s irrefutable now that for the fetus brain to develop properly, it needs a great deal of omega 3’s.
If you are a pregnant mother, you should strongly consider using a molecularly distilled fish oil supplement so your fetus’ brain has the best chance of developing properly. Of course, speak with a doctor before doing this since fish oil effects or any chemical effects should always be closely monitored by a physician during pregnancy.
If you are a nursing mother, you should also be taking an omega 3 supplement or eating enough omega 3 foods because they are an essential fatty acid. Essential means our bodies need it but cannot manufacture them on its own.
The omega 3 you obtain in your diet is passed along to your baby when you breastfeed.
Even if you are no longer breastfeeding, you should be careful to take in enough omega 3 fat for your own health. If you have young children, adequate levels of omega 3 intake are associated with less attention deficit and hyperactivity and higher IQ’s.
Lastly, fish oil effects have also been shown to help ease menstrual cramps.
Fish Oil Effects and Inflammation
Did you know that a lot of the aches and pains associated with arthritis are due to inflammation? This is why studies have shown that one of the fish oil effects is to help alleviate these pains in those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
The same is true for Crohn’s disease, which is characterized by painful inflammation of the bowel. In one particular year long study, 69% of Crohn’s sufferers who used a fish oil supplement stayed symptom free as opposed to only 28% who were administered a placebo.
Also, if you know anyone who suffers from psoriasis or acne, you know how painful and embarrassing these conditions can be. Maybe you have them yourself. One of the primary problems in these conditions is inflammation. Although fish oils are not going to cure these conditions, its anti-inflammatory properties often help make them much better.
Now that you’re fully aware of the best fish oil effects to date, you can begin to take the steps to choosing the right fish oil supplement for your daily regimen.

Rapid Improvement in Function in Alzheimers After Enbrel Injection
This is a look at a small but fascinating study investigating a new treatment for Alzheimer's disease.Brains in Alzheimer's disease are damaged by long term inflammation of the brain. The progressive deterioration in memory and ability to perform tasks that must have a functioning memory take their gradual toll on these patients and their families. Several million Americans are expected to be develop Alzheimer's disease in the coming decades. Effective treatments are currently poor and ineffective, so new treatments are crucial for the patients and their families.
Alzheimer's disease is a demntia resulting from inflammation and damagein the brain. The damage and inflammation occur due to a variety of chemicals that the human body produces for other purposes. One specific chemical called TNF-alpha is thought to be a main cause of brain inflammation that occurs in Alzheimer's disease. TNF-alpha is a protein molecule made by white blood cells which stimulates and activates the immune system in response to cancer or some infections. Too much of this TNF-alpha compound is believed to lead to immune system diseases wherein the immune system attacks healthy tissues, suchas joints(rheumatoid arthritis) or skin(psoriasis). The newest treatments for these diseases make use of drugs that stopTNF alpha activity, thereby reducing undesirable inflammation.
Since 1998 etanercept(aka Enbrel), a potent TNF blocking drug has been approved for human use, for rheumatoid arthritis as the first official accepted indication. Etanercept is now being used for a numerous other diseases that involve excesss TNF activity. Etanercept hooks on to TNF-alpha and stops TNF-alpha receptors on many cell surfaces. This blocking effect reduces the inflammatory effects of excess TNF-alpha. Researchers and physicians currently have extensive experience using etanercept to treat a variety of inflammatory disorders where TNF-alpha over activity is believed to play a role. Diseases such as psoriasis and Crohn's disease in addition to rheumatoid arthritis are examples of diseases that etanercept is used.
A recent fascinating study from The Department of Neurology, USC School of Medicine used injections of etanercept(Enbrel) in the posterior neck. This location of injection was used to improve delivery of the drug into the brain, where it was hoped that its anti-inflammatory activity would take effect. The study included 15 patients who were injected weekly for six months. Posterior neck injection of etanercept led to sustained cognitive improvement for these patients with Alzheimer's disease which ranged from mild to severe. Other recent studies have also supported the idea that TNF plays a major part in the brain inflammation of Alzheimer's disease.
The study authors from Department of Neurology, USC School of Medicine noted an unexpected and dramatic clinical result (which recurred in the majority of the patients that were treated with etanercept ). The dramatic but repeatedly observed response was a noticeable improvement within minutes of perispinal etanercept injection. The rapid clinical improvement in memory and symptoms required the authors of the study to add new testing procedures to their protocol-so that they could measure the improvements.
A case report of an elderly 81 year old man describes markedimprovement within 2 hours. The improvement included the ability toremember interview details, improvement in ability to do simple calculations, ability to be better oriented to where he was and what time it was. The man continued to show the improved level of brain function including memory and performance of tasks throughout the duration study and in a 14 day follow up period. Family members of the elderly patient also reported that they had noticed improvement in the patient while at home.
The report of the journal article appears in the Jan 2008 Journal of Neuroinflammation
