Psoriasis – the facts

Psoriasis is a skin disease that afflicts a large number of people. The condition is a chronic one – in other words, to date, there is no known cure for psoriasis. Psoriasis usually exhibits itself in the form of a buildup of skin tissue, often with a red tinge and a scaly texture. There are a number of variations to psoriasis which can have different characteristics and raised red skin with thick silvery scales.

The most common area of the body to suffer from psoriasis are the arms and legs, with the elbows and knees being the most affected areas of these body parts. However, psoriasis can also develop on the body's trunk, nails, or even the scalp as well as other areas of the body's skin surface.

Though incurable, psoriasis is not an infectious disease and so, in no way contagious.  This is a very import point to be aware of because the outward of the disease can be off-putting. However, the red scaly skin that is the most common sign of psoriasis can easily become infected as the skin can often crack allowing bacteria and germs to enter the skin.

Research points to a possible cause of psoriasis, and that's body's own immune system. Our immune system produces white blood cells whose function is to protect the body's systems from infections. In sufferers from psoriasis, a certain type of white blood cell known as a T cell can spark off skin inflammation. The same cells are also the reasons for skin cells reproducing and growing faster than normal which in its turn causes the characteristic patches of raised skin.

Other research has shown that some forms of psoriasis can be transmitted genetically, making some people more prone to the disease. Statistics show that approximately 33% of psoriasis sufferers have at least one member of the family who also suffers from psoriasis.
