Psoriasis Donation
A couple of questions in regards to psoriasis...?
firstly, I am a female, who was recently diagnosed with scalp psoriasis...A few questions have crossed my mind since my diagnosis:
1. Is it alright to wear my hair in a pony tail?
2. Am I still allowed to donate my hair? It was only a few inches short of my donation goal when I was diagnosed..
3. If I scratch anywhere else on my body, will it spread to that area?
4. I've heard that it comes as goes, because it is a chronic health issue. What are the time frames like? Are they very spaced out, close together, or dependent on the person?
Hello there,
First off you should know, contrary to what your family doctor may be telling you, that there are plenty of things that can be done to treat Psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a non-contagious condition, that cannot be spread to others, though is does often run in the family. Nobody is sure what EXACTLY causes Psoriasis, but they believe it to be a hyperactive immune response. It takes the average person's (not diagnosed with Psoriasis) skin approx. 28 days to "turn over" (that is go from cell, to skin cell, to fall off), a person with Psoriasis will have skin that "turns over" every 4-7 days! This is the cause of the scaling (rough patches) , itchiness, and flaking!
Now for your questions:
1. Yes, you should be fine to wear your hair in a pony tail. There are several factors which may make your Psoriasis worse, this includes heat, so this may or may not be an issue.
2.You should be allowed to donate your hair, as I noted earlier it is NOT contagious! On a side note, having shorter hair may be better for you as it will allow you to access the scalp easier, thus improving treatment.
3.No, it will not spread if you scratch. This being said, it may pop up in patches on other parts of the body (most commonly the Elbows, trunk, etc) this is NOT related to scratching!!
4.Every person is completely different, some people may have no symptoms until they are in their older years and others have it from shortly after birth. There is no cure, but you can keep in in remission if you follow treatment regiments!
The treatments:
1.Topicals: There are several great topical solutions for Scalp Psoriasis. The best seems to be Xamiol, made by LeoPharma. It is a new product but we have seen great success in our office. The second is DermaSmooth, this requires some work and is somewhat messy, but effective. There are others, search for Clobeatosol, Dovonex Solutions ect.
2.Phototherapy: This will not work with much success for scalp psoriasis, as it requires the light to hit the skin directly.
3.Biologic Treatment: This is the cutting edge of treatment reserved for severe psoriasis. Given by injection, this treatment suppresses the immune system and slows the skin proliferation. Some names include: Remicade, Humira, Enbrel. (note biologics are pretty expensive if you don't have a drug plan!)
I would try the Xamiol first, ask your Dermatologist, they often get small sample bottles from the Pharma Companies.
Goodluck with your condition, if you have anyother questions, email me at dermadev@yahoo.com
Be well,

Artificial Hair Replacement Techniques
The hair replacement treatment can be done in two ways. This could be either by using concealers and wicks or by surgery. The use of cosmetics is a temporary way in hair restoring procedure and meaning fully said as a hair loss hiding technique. Hair cannot be restored by any kind of cosmetics that are man made.
Baldness could be hid by the use of wicks. This method is not prevailing these days because of the increased concern over one's own privacy. More over wick causes itching in the scalp and causes skin disease like the psoriasis. Those who are allergic cannot even use the wick for a single moment. The wick is a artificial hair.
Another way of hiding the baldness and short hair is, by using the natural hair that is taken from others. This method is not so much popular as no one will be interested in using others cutted hair. Donation of hair is also not so common. This hair replacement technique is an utter waste.
The most intelligent technique designed by the scientists of hair is the surgical way of replacing the hair and making it re grow. This hair is taken from the patient itself who under goes the hair restoration or hair transplant surgery. All the hair loss clinic are not allowed to do the hair transplant surgery since it is risky. The hair clinic that are approved by the FDA are only allowed to perform the surgery.
This hair restoration method is the most successful in all time in the field of hair study. Many with baldness due to hereditary are cured by the surgery. The people those who have baldness and tries to cure it by natural means is simply wasting the time by non sense thinking. Baldness cannot be cured naturally other than God.
The surgical hair restoration is done in the following method. The hair restoration is different from hair transplant. In hair restoration technique a tissue is taken from the side or from behind the head of a person known as the donor. This donor tissue is chosen such that it is rich in hair follicle cells genetically. It is a bit time consuming process. This treatment takes a single day for surgery.
The tissue is placed in the baldness place along the hairline in order not to disturb the hair line one has. The hair restoration surgery has some scar in the scalp. But it can be minimized to certain extent. Certain graft cite products will be advised to be used after the hair restoration surgery. The next surgical hair replacement technique is the hair transplant surgery. In this technique the hair is taken from the high dense area of the head like the side and behind the head and it is planted in the less dense area or the place where the hair is thin or lost. This surgery is very easy and it can be done within hours.
