Is There A Solution To Very Dry Skin?

Question:

All my life I've been plagued with terrible dry skin. Despite using plenty of Emulsiderm bath oil and moisturising cream, I still have copious amounts of skin falling like snow when I undress. Is there anyway that I can kick start my body into doing its job properly?

Answer:

I get so many letters like yours. We have to remember that skin is a living, breathing, constantly changing organ. You can compare its structure to the layers of an onion. The outer layer, or epidermis, consists of cell strata that are in a constant process of turnover, with a life cycle of about 27 days. The very top layer of cells (stratum corneum) is at the end of the cycle; it's also called the horny layer because cells here are basically 'dead'. As this outer layer peels away, the next one is exposed, dries out and peels away in turn. All the action takes place in the middle layer of skin, or dermis, which is home to nerves, blood vessels, glands, hair follicles and cells that are actively multiplying; also elastin, which provides firmness and elasticity, and collagen. Under that is a fatty layer, which cushions the skin from bones and muscles.

The cells in the epidermis are mostly keratinocytes, which contain keratin - a fibre that packs the cells in straight lines, and makes the outer horny layer a tough, resilient,  waterproof membrane. This vial barrier protects the body ag4inst invaders such as infections and toxins, and equally stops vital body fluid getting our (although toxins from the gut can be diffused to the surface via the blood vessels In the dermis and eliminated).

The degree of dryness that you are experiencing is abnormal. however. The reason for your 'snowstorms' is probably that your skin's life cycle is turning over far faster than it should. There are several possible causes. I've noticed that when patients save very high stomach acid, they develop dry, flaking skin, for reasons we don't understand. Certain types of drugs, including antibiotics, steroids, pain killers and diuretics.  and also excess vitamin C (ie, an intake of more than I gramme daily), may cause dryness, as do diseases of the liver or kidneys, diabetes and stomach ulcers.

Nutritional deficiencies also lead to similar problems. Most skin disorders, including Eczema and psoriasis, cause flakiness in the affected areas.

For hundreds of patients, however, the problem is simple: they bathe in over-hot water day in, day out and this causes the skin to burn and moult as it would after too much sun. Showering in tepid water is the solution. In India, it used to be a ritual to massage the body with a few drops of sesame or mustard oil ten to l5 minutes before bathing. This keeps the skin in perfect condition.

Here are some more suggestions

Supplements

* Soak three twigs of kadu in a cup of hot water overnight, strain and drink on an empty stomach in the morning. This is a good detox tea.

* Take one capsule of aloe vera twice daily for two months to help skin generally.

* Take two tablets of Stomach Formula twice daily for two months to aid digestion.

Diet

* Eat fresh wholesome food, with plenty of oily fish, nuts and seeds, vegetables and non-citrus fruit.

* Eat every three hours to keep blood sugar levels steady.

* Soak ten almonds in room-temperature water for 24 hours, peel off skin and eat in the morning.

* Avoid acidic foods, including citrus and sour fruits (oranges, grapefruit, mangoes, lemons, pineapple, passion fruit rhubarb, tomatoes and kiwi).

* Avoid deep-fried and spicy foods, chillis and chilli sauces, rich curries, all ready-mixed sauces and other foods containing additives and preservatives.

Bathing and cleaning

* Avoid conventional soap (which has had the naturally moisturising glycerine removed) and don't use foam baths and gels - they contain harsh chemicals that remove essential fats from the skin and have been known to cause skin problems. Many household cleaners and washing powders seem to trigger skin problems, so consider switching to a brand such as Ecover.

* Massage the soles of your feet and toes with pure sesame, mustard, sweet almond or jojoba oil at bedtime. In some mysterious way, the oil is absorbed and distributed to the rest of the skin. For temporary relief, you can also apply this oil to your body after bathing.

For Effective Acne Treatment, Eat These Fruits

It's been said in the drugless fraternity that "you are what you eat".

Fruit is also highly esteemed as a helpful near panacea for a plethora of human ailments. Well let's see which ones are helpful for skin disorders, namely acne.

-Apples –"Remember the saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Well

It could mean keeps the ‘dermatologist' away in this case. When in season, (mostly through fall and winter, try to eat 3 – 4 apples a day while working to alleviate acne. Apples are good for skin health. From experience, you are best of eating ONLY organic apples and you could actually get great deals at your local Trader Joe's or Co-Op Stores, or Open Air Farmer's market. Heck, they are usually on sale as a "365" item at Whole foods so they shouldn't be hard to acquire

-Apricots – These are a summer stone fruit. Eat as many as you like. They are excellent sources of vitamin A, the B-complex vitamins and fiber. As with all fruits, I suggest eating organically grown apricots only for acne treatment.

-Bananas – This fruit needs no introduction, being that it's available year round, and even organically is only 27cents for each one; you've got to at least one banana a day. Dr. Doug Graham, a trainer for several athletes and show-biz stars, goes as far as to saying anywhere between 5-15 of these babies in the afternoon after your physical exertions are extremely excellent. From my experience, they are very useful for combating constipation, which perhaps is the main cause of acne. One more thing, they have been said to have EVERYTHING the human body needs to survive.

-Berries-These are a spring time fruit. This signifies their properties as cleansing items as that period of the year is when nature does a ‘clean-house' of some sorts. They help a weak kidney and are good for creating good skin on your face. They are also good for constipation and various skin disorders – eczema, acne, psoriasis

-Cantaloupes – In the summer times, I could live of these or any other melons and be just fine. Being as they are high in vitamin A and C, and have many other minerals, they are good for any type of skin problems

- Cherries – Hey, try squeezing one of this when they are fully ripe. Doesn't the juice resemble one's blood? Needless to say, they are good blood cleansers and help the liver and kidney. They promote regular bowel movements. I will have you know that an exclusive diet of these for 3 plus days can be a very, very effective camouflaged fasts and for acne, it's definitely up there with natural healing substances.

- Figs: As a Mucus-binding (disease Healing Food), they are ranked as the most potent fruit for eliminating debris in the body. They are available in the summer times, but dry figs could be soaked overnight in other periods to re-hydrate them for consumption as they are indeed great overall body healing and building foods.

-Grapefruits – helps to dissolve and eliminate poisons from drugs thus improving the liver function. These, being an acid fruit, are best consumed in the earlier parts of the day. As with all citrus fruits, they are very mucus-binding and cleansing as well.

-Grapes –I don't know about you, but come late summer, I can last for days on Globe Grapes (don't believe in seedless fruits), and suffice it to say that for combating constipation, cleansing and building the blood and body, they are extremely effective items.

-Lemons: Everyone should squeeze lemon in warm water first thing in the morning. They are very alkaline forming, and restore balance to the body. They also help loosen up any debris that fruits and vegetables (with their broom-like qualities) may have loosened up the day before.

Well, truth is you can't go wrong with eating any and a lot of fruits when in season and preferably organically grown to combat acne problems.

If you want to take it to the next level, a juice fast is definitely worth the shot too for a superior acne treatment.

You do have good skin underneath, just feed it with the right substances and you'd see the results for yourself.
