In the Universe there seems to be a few golden numbers and I truly believe that this is one of them. You might or might have not heard about the golden ratio, the Planck's constant, pi, etc. But the fact that one frequency of electromagnetic radiation, out of the infinite number of possible others, can have such a powerful effect on a condition that seriously affect so many people, to me it's remarkable.
After all, do you really feel the benefit every day of waking up knowing that pi=3.1415...... But probably asking the same question about this ultra violet wave to one of the many patients that have been reported as experiencing very successful results with 311nm UVB photo therapy would yield vastly different results.
Why this particular ultra violet wavelength is so good at treating skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema only the great architect might know! But as Einstein said, 'I want to know how God thinks'. Ultra violet light is a range of electromagnetic radiation that falls between the wavelengths of 100nm to 400nm aprox.
James C. Maxwell proved the assertion of Michael Faraday that visible light is an electromagnetic wave. What separates it from other ranges, like that of Ultra violet, is that when visible light interact with the human retina in the eye, it starts a series of processes that lead to the perception of sight.
Please notice here that this differences arise from a property of waves called frequency, how many times the wave of light oscillates in a second. Another measure of waves is wavelength, which can be calculated by dividing the speed of the wave / frequency. This relationship means that faster frequencies lead to smaller wavelength.
Because these frequencies are so large it's more common to use the size of their wavelength. 311nm UVB has a smaller wavelength than all visible light, but one important fact about this, and one that just came to the knowledge of humans after the early 1900's is that this also means higher discrete packages of energy.
When a patient suffering from psoriasis is exposed to 311nm UVB light classical thinking would see this as the patient being immersed in a smooth sea of a substance called light, (some invisible frequencies are considered light in physics), like putting a baby in a tub of water.
Albert Einstein proved the physical existence of the fundamental particles called photons, fundamental meaning that it hasn't been found to be made up of anything else, pure energy. In this way the patient can be seen as being showered with this tiny energy pellets, kind of like those fancy shower heads in hotel rooms, when in massage mode you can almost feel individual balls of water hitting you.
After years of careful use of a wide range of UV radiation it has been found that the photons of a very narrow band of frequencies centered around 311nm has the most beneficial amount of energy for treatment of conditions like psoriasis and eczema, with the least amount of damage.
