UVB exposure for medical reasons, is it safe?
Now I have psoriasis and some time ago this year, my doctor decided to put me in this UVB booth thing. I go in it every monday & thursday for about 8 mins. I don't really wear sunscreen, except for my face.
Like most medical treatments, there are benefits and risks. These should have been explained to you before starting treatment. Benefits of UVB for psoriasis are wide spread areas of treatment, no toxicity to the body, only twice weekly treatment, avoidance of side effects of other treatments like topical steroids. The risks include sunburn, risk of future skin cancer, no benefit to joints, hard to treat scalp and skin fold areas. The sunscreen will block treatment on the face, but if there is no psoriasis there the sunscreen should be worn. UVB is safe and widely used, but not without some risk. The risk vs benefit must be weighed.
