Scalp Disease
Scalp Disease
I just had a tick removed from my scalp. Is there any preventive measures I should be taking now?

I don't know how long it had been there. It was pretty big when I found it. I want to know if there is something I should be taking now to avoid Lyme Disease.

Do you live in an area where Lyme's Disease is prevelant? Was it a deer tick? If so, then there isn't really any preventative measures. Just watch for a red bulls eye rash which is usually on the trunk of your body or upper arms/legs. Also, watch for a fever and aches and pains mostly in your joints. If you notice those, get the the doctor ASAP. They will put you on an antibiotic. The sooner it is treated, the less lasting effect it will have on you. If you don't notice any signs after about 6 weeks, you can have a blood test done to look for antiobodies if you want. Otherwise, chances are super slim that you have it.

Scalp Itching and Red Burning Symptoms - Know the Causes of Scalp Diseases and How to Prevent them

Problems of the scalp, no matter the severity, are often caused by a number of conditions, which includes:

1. Acne or pimples eczema - this is an itchy swelling and redness of the scalp skin that can bring you an endless supply of agony. It is extremely uncomfortable and I know this because I suffered from it myself.

2. Allergic reactions such as to shampoos, hair sprays, or food

3. Hormonal changes related to diabetes, low thyroid hormone level known as hypothyroidism, excessive irritation due to shampooing too often with a variety of different products.

4. Anorexia nervosa - an eating disorder that causes people to not eat enough to maintain a normal weight.

5. Psoriasis - a chronic skin disease characterized by dry red patches covered with scales. It occurs especially on the scalp and ears and genitalia and the skin over bony prominences.

6. Scalp ringworm - an infection of the skin caused by fungus and appears as itching circular patches.

7. Injury directly linked to insect bites, cuts, or burns - This will create an opening/tear on your scalp which is more than likely to get easily infected.

What can be done to prevent all this?

1. The first thing you can start doing RIGHT NOW is to begin eating on a regular basis. The objective here is to make sure your body gets enough intake of food to sustain itself so that other parts of your anatomy, such as your scalp, does not suffer. I'm not saying you should go overboard and begin to eat like there's no tomorrow. But make sure you keep a consistent eating schedule.  (Disregard warning at your peril.  I learned this the hard way.)

2. Another thing you can do to prevent a severe scalp condition is to avoid using other people's personal care items i.e. combs and brushes and even hats. This will go a long way in helping to prevent lice and ringworm of the scalp.

3. Also, for your own sake, resist the urge to use a variety of shampoos. Find one shampoo that works for you and stick to it. Stop using different hair products on your scalp. It is not a good idea and will only lead to further damage to your scalp.

4. If you do scratch your scalp, do so carefully. And after scratching, apply some type of antibacterial ointment on the same spot that you scratched. This will prevent your scalp situation from getting worse. Scratching is inevitable, and I condone it. Yes, I condone it. I know about the unbearable hell a scalp infection can cause, therefore it would be unrealistic of me to advise anyone who is suffering from what I suffered from to not scratch. If you must scratch, scratch, but make sure you protect the irritated scalp area with an antibacterial ointment.

Finding a direct cure for a scalp problem can prove,
in most cases
, to be an extremely difficult task. I call it "extremely difficult" because, most health-care professionals usually don't know how to cure the disease. It'll take several trips to different doctors before you're lucky enough to actually find one who is specialized in issues of the scalp. And even then, the first couple of prescriptions you're prescribed might not work.
