My dog has dry,itchy skin.....?

My dog(rat terrier/dachshund mix)has dry, itchy skin.He seems to scratch all the time.He is a house dog, goes out for a little play and bathroom time, does not have fleas, eats pedigree dog food that I add 2000mg of fish oil to twice a day,He gets bathed every 3 to 4 weeks with oatmeal shampoo.I have tried several shampoos in the past that were moisterizing shampoos. These were bought at the pet store and not at chain stores.Nothing seems to help.He has woke us several times the past few nights scratching and yelping because he was scratching so hard.Jonah(my dog) sleeps in the bedroom with us(in his bed) and I don't want to put him in the garage at night. But we have got to get some sleep.Does anyone know how to help him.I don't want to just treat the symptoms.I want to do something that will help his dry skin.Any help out there???Thanks !!!!!
He is 3 yrs old.

First off you dog has allergies(as a dachshund owner I am a pro at this). You need to have your dog seen at the vet and given a cortisone shot. Doxies are world known for seasonal allergies, and over shampooing will not help!! By shampooing 3-4 times a week can dry the skin out which will make matters worse. A doxie naturally produces a oil that they need on their skin.

Take your pup to the vet ask for a cortisone shot for allergies(this will last a while) they may also give you some meds for secondary infections caused by all the open wounds from scratching this normally clears up quickly.

Start giving your pup 1/2 a benedryl with a meal(only 1 time daily is needed), and switch them to a sensitive skin formula dog food such as Pro Plan for sensitive skin. Keep up the Omega fish oils!!

Trust me this helps. My lil doxie cost me every year for this same thing!!

Discover the Truth About Dry Itchy Skin

For many years, a lot of us relied on Unilever and Vaseline for dry skin care.

But, their so-called solution to dry itchy skin may have actually caused the problem.

It also causes premature aging of the skin.

Are you starting to look older than you really are?

Petrolatum, petroleum jelly and mineral oils are the staples for dry skin care products.

The petroleum byproducts are widely available and very affordable, but they aren’t at all compatible with the skin’s natural oil, which is called sebum.

Sebum provides moisture, protects against infections and prevents cracking.

It is produced by the sebaceous glands.

If they secrete too much, you have excessive oiliness and sometimes acne.

If they secrete too little, you have dry itchy skin.

If left unchecked, you may end up with a lot of other problems, such as cracking, flaking and wrinkling.

Petrolatum is not a good moisturizer at all, because it does not penetrate.

It may seem to be absorbed, but it’s not.

Really, it just sort of “dries up” or evaporates.

The best dry skin care creams contain plant oils that are very similar to sebum, so they penetrate deeply and are very effective for relieving dry itchy skin.

Many of the most effective ones also “balance” sebum production, so that you don’t end up with some oily spots and some dry ones.

Look for avocado, macadamia, grape seed and olive oils.

Capuacu and Shea butter are also effective.

Jojoba is like a liquid wax and is one of the oils that balance sebum production.

You may not realize it, but dry skin care is also anti-aging skincare.

People with naturally oily skin are more resistant to the effects of aging.

They have fewer wrinkles and less sagging.

Some of the most effective moisturizers have been designed for use in anti-wrinkle creams, but some of them were actually created to address dry itchy skin that typically accompanies contact dermatitis.

One of these is Functional Keratin.

Keratin is a protein found in human skin.

Functional Keratin is a new ingredient that cosmetic companies and other manufacturers can use in their dry skin care creams or other lotions.

It contains tiny protein fragments that penetrate deeply and can be used by the cells to repair damage.

Researchers have shown that it relieves dry itchy skin caused by detergent related dermatitis.

They have also shown that it reduces wrinkles.

It helps to prevent moisture loss by creating an invisible barrier that “locks it in”.

It is the most effective dry skin care ingredient on the market.

There’s another things that you should be aware of.

Alcohols in other health and beauty aids may be the cause of your dry itchy skin.

After shave, body gel, antibacterial soaps, perfumes and many other products contain large amounts of alcohol, which is very drying.

You should also remember to eat right, take a multi-vitamin and drink plenty of purified water.

Excessive dryness can be a symptom of chronic dehydration or nutritional deficiency.

Hopefully, this will help you find the right dry skin care regimen and solve your problem.
