when someone has eczema, is it always due to an allergic reaction of some sort? examples: detergents, foods that sort of thing.

NO. Eczema is basically "derm speak" for a dermatitis, or inflamed skin. As such, it can certainly become inflamed because of an allergic reaction to something, such as contact with poison ivy. But, it can become inflamed by just being irritated, such as coming into contact with something that is too harsh for the skin, such as a harsh detergent. And, of course, it can be irritated from within, too, such as from certain disease states that have no known allergens causing it, such as atopic dermatitis.
